About us
What Am I Owed started with a simple observation: Americans leave billions of dollars unclaimed every year, not because the money isn't theirs, but because nobody explains how to get it in plain English. Unclaimed property sitting with state treasurers. Class action settlements that pay $50 to $5,000 with no receipt required. Airline refunds the law now makes automatic. Fees a bank will reverse if you know which sentence to write.
We publish practical guides for the United States: how much you may be owed, which law or agency rule backs it up, exactly what to say and where to file, and what to do if the company ignores you. Every guide shows the date it was last reviewed.
Who's behind it
This site is edited by Manuel Cantalejo, an independent publisher. We are not a law firm, a debt settlement company, or a claims service. When a guide recommends a no-win-no-fee service or a partner, we say so on the page and explain how we make money.
How we work
- Official sources only. Each guide cites the federal statute, agency rule, or state office it relies on (DOT, CFPB, FTC, FCC, Department of Labor, state attorneys general and treasurers), with links.
- Free first. We always show the free, do-it-yourself route before any paid option.
- Reviewed and dated. Laws change, settlement deadlines pass, agency forms move. We update guides and show the review date. If something is out of date, tell us.
- No individual advice. These are general guides. Rules vary by state, and for anything with real money at stake or a deadline that's about to run, a licensed attorney in your state is the right call.
